Intermolecular and Surface Forces by Jacob N. Israelachvili Review

          Intermolecular and Surface Forces by Israelachvili is a fantastic work. It is certainly the best on the subject. The material is presented in a very logical sequence. There are two important aspects to the success of this book. First it is a great reference to the forces of micro and nano scales; all forces. Secondly it includes key explanations to matters that are generally difficult to understand, at least in other books on the subject. However, an area for potential improvement would be to provide the reader with more description and explanations of the nature of these forces without the reference to their mathematical representations. Nature is not based on mathematics, it supersedes it. Nevertheless the book is the best in the field and is an essential tool for all research in the micro and nano scales. It does include many comments on the nature of the intermolecular forces but not sufficient.

Fundamentals of Molecular Virology by Nicholas H. Acheson Review

This text was used as more of a supplement for my virology class, as it had much more detail than was expected of us. The writing style is very concise, sometimes to the point where a few extra sentences would have made the difference between understanding the material better. It did encompass a large number of viruses, which was great. The beginning of every chapter had "specs", if you may, of important and distinguishing characteristics of the viral family which serves as a good review.

Overall very through, but a bit dense until you've absorbed enough material.

The Machinery of Life by David S. Goodsell Review

I was in school back when all that students knew about DNA was four chemicals and what we knew about an archetypal cell could be drawn on a single sheet of homework paper. This book is bringing me into the twenty-first century with ease. It is extremely clearly written although it deals with unbelievably complicated goings-on at the molecular/cell level. Every page seems to contain an "aha so that's how it works" or "aha then it really boils down to ..." moment. I'm having a ball with it. I bought it for my daughter, who works in a genetics lab, and after glancing through it I bought another copy for us parents. I'll probably buy another for my programmer cubical-mate where I work.

The illustrations get the most attention but, truthfully, they just serve as quick illustrations of what the text is saying in detail. Probably some readers can "read" the illustrations but IMHO it isn't necessary to examine them.

It has been a long time since I've bought multiple copies of a book, let alone a science book, and I really feel this one is a bargain at ten times the price for people who want to educate themselves.

This book is a triumph of technical writing. Ken Dill possesses an extraordinary ability to distill complex technical concepts down to the cogent bits necessary to understand the physics of the situation. The maxim, "make it as simple as possible, but not simpler" definitely applies here. The only major challenge with this book is that a reader may come away with a notion of inflated comprehension. This is not a fault...just a byproduct of the big contrast between the clarity of the Dill (and Bromberg) text and the other, technically obfuscated, textbooks and articles in the field.

Easily the best (introductory) textbook on statistical physics that I have encountered, and the only one that I can heartily recommend to a student or non-specialist.

Microbiology Principles and Explorations has been a best-selling textbook for several editions due to the author's engaging writing style where her passion for the subject shines through the narrative. The text's student-friendly approach provides readers with an excellent introduction to the study of Microbiology. This text is appropriate for non-major and mixed major microbiology courses, allied health, agriculture and food sciences courses too.

The image shows two T4 bacteriophage viruses attaching to, and injecting DNA into, a bacterium. Like alien invaders, they are going to consume the contents of the bacterial cell, using the materials to make hundreds of copies of themselves, finally rupturing open the cell wall of the now dead bacterium, liberating the hundreds of offspring to attack more bacteria. Using bacteriophages (bacteriophage therapy) gets around the problems of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. And, since a given bacteriophage will target and kill only one specific strain of bacterium, the normal bacterial flora will not be disturbed, thus preventing side effects such as diarrhea and vaginal yeast infections.

          This was a loose leaf version of the text, it was a lot cheaper than the bound version, and less bulky/more convenient in that you didn't have to carry the whole book around, you could just bring the chapter you were learning that that time.

BRS Board Review Series Microbiology and Immunology Review

          This book is an excellent review for both COMLEX and USMLE micro section. It fills a lot of the missing pieces that you may not see on First Aid. Although I think this book is a little overkill for boards, the advantage is that you will most likely be able to answer those "odd ball" questions thrown to you on the actual board exam. Also, Just as one of the earlier reviewers stated, one chapter has provided a very nice flow chart that served me well for quickly narrowing down my bugs on board based on symptoms like "bloody diarrhea with/without vomit...with/without fever...with/without PMN...etc...". There are four 50-questions exams at the very end that will really test how much you know and help prepare you well for board. Since micro is usually the second most high yield on board after path, I would recommend this book only if you either want a better grasp of micro or feel uncomfortable understanding thoroughly the micro section covered in first aid (which happened to me in the latter case). I will give this a 4 star rating only because there are some flaws in the answer keys for the exams in the back of book. Otherwise, I will recommend to anyone who wanna kill the micro section on boards.

Lippincott's Illustrated Q&A Review of Biochemistry Review

For the Biochemistry NBME exam, this book helped me more than any other resource during the few days prior to the test. It is mostly clinical vignette-style questions, which are VERY similar to what I saw on test day (with the exception that a few pages use color pictures, which the NBME doesn't have). My medical school's biochem faculty highly recommended it, and many of my classmates agree that this book was indispensible. The questions it asks are well beyond the scope of what we learned in our course lectures (many diseases were referenced that I had never heard of!), and so it really allowed me to get a good idea of where I stood, and got me up to speed on unfamiliar material fast. Don't be surprised if a lot of the questions in this book completely stump you. That might discourage you (it did me), but it means you can learn a lot from it!

The answers to the questions are explained so well, I hardly needed to consult reference material as I studied this book.

          I am taking biochemistry again as a graduate student, so this is not the first time I have to deal with biochemistry and its books, resembles one of my worst nightmares, I have to tell you, that this book cover most of general biochemistry that you have to know like many other books, but with one difference " you can actually understand what you are reading", it has a much simpler and clear aproach than other books, this defenatily a book for a student, specially undergraduate. It has a good organization, everything fact is illustrated with an example, which really helps you to understand better a concept, and in each page you have key words, which is always a good reminder, a summary of important concepts in the end of each chapter, which really helps you review after reading and for the exams, and also the questions review in the end of each chapter they are excellent, working with each concept from the basics and moving to more challenge questions, there is also a web site, I just found out last night, where you can see the molecules and reactions in 3D and taque quizes(excellent). I also purchased the study guide which I didnt get yet, but judgging by this book I dought it is not going to be worth it. Now don't get the wrong idea, biochemistry is a complex subject, you will need to study and dedicate, and this book is a tool for and will make much easier for you it did for me. Thanks for the authors, finally somebody made a book focus in learning and teaching not just for biochemists that already know a hell of biochemistry..Thank you soo much..

          Author Dawson Church applies the insights of the new field of Epigenetics (epi=above, i.e. control above the level of the gene) to healing.           The title of the book attracted my attention "...the new biology of intention". I was curious about it and wondered if its concept is similar to a book I've read before - "The Biology of Belief" by Bruce Lipton. So, I bought it and after reading it, I found it is a great book with easy-to-comprehend explanation, it is informative, inspiring and full of details with profound and thoughtful ideas. Both of the books are great! Both of them suggest our thoughts and feelings do affect our body. Our consciousness, our way of thinking, play an important role to our own well being. The Genie in Your Genes opens the door to a better health care and a better future medicine, as well as a great gateway to a fast spiritual growth.

BRS Cell Biology and Histology 6th Edition Review

          This was a great review for histo. The text is easy to understand and the questions after each section, as well in the back of the book, are very helpful. I got through it in one and a half days and felt like I had a good grasp on its content. The only problem was that the standardized microbiology/histo test we took contained much information not found in this book.

The organization and content are tied together to provide students with the complete picture of biochemistry and how it relates to human diseases.

Textbook of Biochemistry with Clinical Correlations Review

          I have hundreds of medical textbooks, and have yet to find a serious "supplements" web site, always touted as offering the student additional valuable learning material, but never living up to the promise. This is a terrific textbook, as were the previous editions, but the web site for Devlin's Biochemistry 7e is a complete farce. The instructions say to select a chapter from a dropdown menu, for which you receive links to a relevant set of additional materials. But every single chapter selection gives exactly the same set of three links: Animated Figures, Guided Explorations, and Interactive Excercises, and regardless of the chapter chosen, each of these three links contains exactly the same set of additional links. In other words, there is no differentiation whatsoever among the chapters, so I have to wonder: exactly what is the purpose of selecting a chapter? Shame on John Wiley for this disgraceful marketing scam. The content of the links is of dubious value, as usual. Does it really enhance understanding of titration curves to see them drawn as animations as opposed to the final, static, result? Has anybody's knowledge of enzyme motifs been clarified by seeing rotating ribbon diagrams? Folks, these are gimmicks to jusify the continually escalating prices of textbooks. Stick to the steak and don't be fooled by the sizzle. Devlin has done a great job putting together a very readable and entertaining book on a difficult subject. If only he could find a serious publisher who doesn't insult our intelligence.

Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry: A Clinical Approach Review

          Biochem is not the easiest subject in the world but it can be more understandable if you have a good book that can simplify complex principles and this book does that. Teaching biochemistry using the clinical approach I believe allows you to apply the principles to everyday life. The book provides vignettes at the beginning of each chapter with colorful patient in the "Waiting Room" with names like "Otto Shape" and "Ann O 'Rexia" with symptoms that will correspond with the teachings of that chapter. They have color coded icons to indicate female, male and infant/young child patients. The icons appear in the margin, identifying information related to the materials in the chapter. They have clinical notes that are typically related to the patients that explain signs or symptoms. There are also method notes that elaborate on how biochemistry is performed and interpreted in lab tests. All of these little side notes allow for a greater understanding of the materials as well as enhances your critical thinking skills. This books will definitely help you get through biochemistry.

          Michael J. Behe, a biochemist at Lehigh University, presents here a scientific argument for the existence of God. Examining the evolutionary theory of the origins of life, he can go part of the way with Darwin--he accepts the idea that species have been differentiated by the mechanism of natural selection from a common ancestor. But he thinks that the essential randomness of this process can explain evolutionary development only at the macro level, not at the micro level of his expertise. Within the biochemistry of living cells, he argues, life is "irreducibly complex." This is the last black box to be opened, the end of the road for science. Faced with complexity at this level, Behe suggests that it can only be the product of "intelligent design."

Interesting how polarizing this book is.

The book itself is interesting enough. It does a good job of explaining the massively complicated world of molecular biochemistry to people like me who are not biologists, chemists, or biochemists. And even though it relies heavily on analogy to get its point across, it does indeed make its point effectively. More effective still is the realization that, for every process explained, there are thousands of others not explained, and there is no reason to believe that any of them are any simpler or more straightforward.

From a philosophical pragmatist perspective, ideas that are true lead to all sorts of different discoveries, and to reliable predictions of the future. Ideas that are false lead to dead ends all around. Darwinian evolution seems to occupy an odd middle ground; it certainly has led to all kinds of discoveries, but resists being modeled mathematically, and I am not aware of any predictions for the future made on the basis of it that have come true.

What about the intelligent design proposal? What will it lead to? What will it explain? Can it be successfully modeled mathematically?

I think the funniest thing about this book (or rather its reception) is the apparent belief on the part of some people (both fans and opponents) that, if they accept Behe's argument, they automatically have to start obeying the Pope, or join the Westboro Baptist Church or something. Behe proposes no such thing.
