Microbiology Principles and Explorations by Jacquelyn G. Black

by Jacquelyn G. Black

Microbiology Principles and Explorations

Microbiology Principles and Explorations Overview

Microbiology Principles and Explorations has been a best-selling textbook for several editions due to the author's engaging writing style where her passion for the subject shines through the narrative. The text's student-friendly approach provides readers with an excellent introduction to the study of Microbiology. This text is appropriate for non-major and mixed major microbiology courses, allied health, agriculture and food sciences courses too.

The image shows two T4 bacteriophage viruses attaching to, and injecting DNA into, a bacterium. Like alien invaders, they are going to consume the contents of the bacterial cell, using the materials to make hundreds of copies of themselves, finally rupturing open the cell wall of the now dead bacterium, liberating the hundreds of offspring to attack more bacteria. Using bacteriophages (bacteriophage therapy) gets around the problems of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. And, since a given bacteriophage will target and kill only one specific strain of bacterium, the normal bacterial flora will not be disturbed, thus preventing side effects such as diarrhea and vaginal yeast infections.

Microbiology Principles and Explorations Review

This was a loose leaf version of the text, it was a lot cheaper than the bound version, and less bulky/more convenient in that you didn't have to carry the whole book around, you could just bring the chapter you were learning that that time.

BRS Board Review Series Microbiology and Immunology by Arthur G. Johnson, Richard J. Ziegler, Louise Hawley

by Arthur G. Johnson, Richard J. Ziegler, Louise Hawley

BRS Board Review Series Microbiology and Immunology

BRS Board Review Series Microbiology and Immunology Overview

BRS Microbiology and Immunology is designed specifically for medical and graduate students for successful preparation for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). This newest edition features a full-color design and illustrations throughout. The book is divided into 12 chapters and presents both a "bug" approach followed by an organ systems approach. It remains a succinct description of the most important microbiological and immunological concepts and critical details needed to understand important human infections and the immune system function and malfunction. End-of-chapter review tests feature updated USMLE-style questions with rationales and four USMLE comprehensive examinations (in 50 question blocks like Step 1) help test memorization and mastery of the subject.

A companion website offers the fully searchable text and an online question bank.

BRS Board Review Series Microbiology and Immunology Review

This book is an excellent review for both COMLEX and USMLE micro section. It fills a lot of the missing pieces that you may not see on First Aid. Although I think this book is a little overkill for boards, the advantage is that you will most likely be able to answer those "odd ball" questions thrown to you on the actual board exam. Also, Just as one of the earlier reviewers stated, one chapter has provided a very nice flow chart that served me well for quickly narrowing down my bugs on board based on symptoms like "bloody diarrhea with/without vomit...with/without fever...with/without PMN...etc...". There are four 50-questions exams at the very end that will really test how much you know and help prepare you well for board. Since micro is usually the second most high yield on board after path, I would recommend this book only if you either want a better grasp of micro or feel uncomfortable understanding thoroughly the micro section covered in first aid (which happened to me in the latter case). I will give this a 4 star rating only because there are some flaws in the answer keys for the exams in the back of book. Otherwise, I will recommend to anyone who wanna kill the micro section on boards.

Clearly explains the experimental observations that form the basis for the science of immunology --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Cellular and Molecular Immunology with Student Consult Online Access Review

I have never touched immuno in my studies prior to this second year of medical school. This text is easy to read, answers all my questions, and effectively touches on all the concepts I could ask a text to address. The information is dense, but not to the extent that taking notes means re-writing the book. I have only read a couple chapters but find the book refreshingly simple for someone previously intimidated and overwhelmed by immunology.

Janeway's Immunobiology by Kenneth Murphy

by Kenneth Murphy

Janeway's Immunobiology

Janeway's Immunobiology Overview

Janeway’s Immunobiology is a textbook that introduces the immune system in all its aspects to undergraduates, and also provides a treatment of the subject that is comprehensive enough to be useful to graduate students interested in research, and to medical students focused on clinical applications. The Eighth Edition has been thoroughly revised and updated and is available in both print and e-book formats.

Janeway’s Immunobiology continues to set the standard for currency and authority with its clear writing style and organization, uniform art program, and scientific accuracy. It presents a consistent point of view throughout—that of the host’s interaction with an environment containing many species of potentially harmful microorganisms. The full-color art program is conceptually coherent and illustrates the processes and mechanisms underlying the concepts in the text. The 16 chapters in this readable, accessible textbook are organized and presented in such a way as to help deliver a complete one-semester immunology course, beginning with innate immunity, then moving to adaptive immunity, and ending with applied clinical immunology.

Discussion questions are provided at the end of Chapters 2 to 16. These questions can be used for review, or as the basis for discussion in class or in informal study groups. Summaries conclude each section and each chapter. As in previous editions, a caduceus icon in the margins indicates topics which are correlated to Case Studies in Immunology, Sixth Edition by Geha and Notarangelo.

Medical Biochemistry: Human Metabolism in Health and Disease

by Robert H. Glew, Miriam D. Rosenthal

Medical Biochemistry: Human Metabolism in Health and Disease

Medical Biochemistry: Human Metabolism in Health and Disease Overview

Metabolism includes various pathways of chemical reactions; understanding these pathways leads to an improved knowledge of the causes, preventions, and cures for human diseases. Medical Biochemistry: Human Metabolism in Health and Disease provides a concise yet thorough explanation of human metabolism and its role in health and diseases. Focusing on the physiological context of human metabolism without extensive consideration of the mechanistic principles of underlying enzymology, the books serves as both a primary text and resource for students and professional in medical, dental, and allied health programs.

Medical Biochemistry: Human Metabolism in Health and Disease Review

This book contains clinically relevant biochemistry for medical students. The chapters on cholesterol are great, and more accurate than other texts. I had trouble with biochemistry--study the pathways over and over again, then read the text, and it will all make sense. Also, the clinical portions of this book are very pragmatic. And the writing is clear and the text concise. Relevant pathology for boards is covered at the ends of chapters.

Lippincott's Illustrated Q&A Review of Biochemistry

by Michael A. Lieberman, Rick Ricer

Lippincott's Illustrated Q&A Review of Biochemistry

Lippincott's Illustrated Q&A Review of Biochemistry Overview

Lippincott's Illustrated Q&A Review of Biochemistry offers up-to-date, clinically relevant board-style questions-perfect for course review and board prep! Approximately 400 multiple-choice questions with detailed answer explanations cover frequently tested topics in biochemistry, including introductory human genetics, cancer biology, and molecular biology. The book is heavily illustrated with photos or pathway diagrams in the question or answer explanation.

Online access to the questions and answers provides flexible study options. Over 200 bonus recall-style questions are also included online!

Lippincott's Illustrated Q&A Review of Biochemistry Review

For the Biochemistry NBME exam, this book helped me more than any other resource during the few days prior to the test. It is mostly clinical vignette-style questions, which are VERY similar to what I saw on test day (with the exception that a few pages use color pictures, which the NBME doesn't have). My medical school's biochem faculty highly recommended it, and many of my classmates agree that this book was indispensible. The questions it asks are well beyond the scope of what we learned in our course lectures (many diseases were referenced that I had never heard of!), and so it really allowed me to get a good idea of where I stood, and got me up to speed on unfamiliar material fast. Don't be surprised if a lot of the questions in this book completely stump you. That might discourage you (it did me), but it means you can learn a lot from it!

The answers to the questions are explained so well, I hardly needed to consult reference material as I studied this book.

Biochemistry : The Molecular Basis of Life Review

I am taking biochemistry again as a graduate student, so this is not the first time I have to deal with biochemistry and its books, resembles one of my worst nightmares, I have to tell you, that this book cover most of general biochemistry that you have to know like many other books, but with one difference " you can actually understand what you are reading", it has a much simpler and clear aproach than other books, this defenatily a book for a student, specially undergraduate. It has a good organization, everything fact is illustrated with an example, which really helps you to understand better a concept, and in each page you have key words, which is always a good reminder, a summary of important concepts in the end of each chapter, which really helps you review after reading and for the exams, and also the questions review in the end of each chapter they are excellent, working with each concept from the basics and moving to more challenge questions, there is also a web site, I just found out last night, where you can see the molecules and reactions in 3D and taque quizes(excellent). I also purchased the study guide which I didnt get yet, but judgging by this book I dought it is not going to be worth it. Now don't get the wrong idea, biochemistry is a complex subject, you will need to study and dedicate, and this book is a tool for and will make much easier for you it did for me. Thanks for the authors, finally somebody made a book focus in learning and teaching not just for biochemists that already know a hell of biochemistry..Thank you soo much..

The Genie in Your Genes

by Dawson Church Ph.D.

The Genie in Your Genes

The Genie in Your Genes Overview

Author Dawson Church applies the insights of the new field of Epigenetics (epi=above, i.e. control above the level of the gene) to healing. Citing hundreds of scientific studies, he shows how beliefs and emotions can trigger the expression of DNA strands. He focuses on a class of genes called Immediate Early Genes or IEGs. These genes turn on within a few seconds of a stimulus. They can be triggered by thoughts or emotions ("I loved that unexpected gift of roses Bill gave me" or "I'm so mad about what Uncle John said at the Christmas party"). Many IEGs are regulatory genes turn on other genes that affect specific aspects of our immune system, such as the production of white blood cells that destroy attacking bacteria and viruses. Epigenetics thus influences our health every day.He coins the new term "Epigenetic Medicine" to describe healing techniques with epigenetic effects. He also summarizes the science behind the infant fields of Energy Psychology and Energy Medicine, both of which offer promising epigenetic medical therapies.

The Genie in Your Genes Review

The title of the book attracted my attention "...the new biology of intention". I was curious about it and wondered if its concept is similar to a book I've read before - "The Biology of Belief" by Bruce Lipton. So, I bought it and after reading it, I found it is a great book with easy-to-comprehend explanation, it is informative, inspiring and full of details with profound and thoughtful ideas. Both of the books are great! Both of them suggest our thoughts and feelings do affect our body. Our consciousness, our way of thinking, play an important role to our own well being. The Genie in Your Genes opens the door to a better health care and a better future medicine, as well as a great gateway to a fast spiritual growth.

Textbook of Biochemistry with Clinical Correlations

by Thomas M. Devlin

Textbook of Biochemistry with Clinical Correlations

Textbook of Biochemistry with Clinical Correlations Overview

This book presents a clear and precise discussion of the biochemistry of eukaryotic cells, particularly those of mammalian tissues, relates biochemical events at a cellular level to the subsequent physiological processes in the whole animal, and cites examples of abnormal biochemical processes in human disease. The organization and content are tied together to provide students with the complete picture of biochemistry and how it relates to human diseases.

Textbook of Biochemistry with Clinical Correlations Review

I have hundreds of medical textbooks, and have yet to find a serious "supplements" web site, always touted as offering the student additional valuable learning material, but never living up to the promise. This is a terrific textbook, as were the previous editions, but the web site for Devlin's Biochemistry 7e is a complete farce. The instructions say to select a chapter from a dropdown menu, for which you receive links to a relevant set of additional materials. But every single chapter selection gives exactly the same set of three links: Animated Figures, Guided Explorations, and Interactive Excercises, and regardless of the chapter chosen, each of these three links contains exactly the same set of additional links. In other words, there is no differentiation whatsoever among the chapters, so I have to wonder: exactly what is the purpose of selecting a chapter? Shame on John Wiley for this disgraceful marketing scam. The content of the links is of dubious value, as usual. Does it really enhance understanding of titration curves to see them drawn as animations as opposed to the final, static, result? Has anybody's knowledge of enzyme motifs been clarified by seeing rotating ribbon diagrams? Folks, these are gimmicks to jusify the continually escalating prices of textbooks. Stick to the steak and don't be fooled by the sizzle. Devlin has done a great job putting together a very readable and entertaining book on a difficult subject. If only he could find a serious publisher who doesn't insult our intelligence.

Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry: A Clinical Approach

by Michael A. Lieberman, Allan Marks

Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry: A Clinical Approach

Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry: A Clinical Approach Overview

A best-selling core textbook for medical students taking medical biochemistry, Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry links biochemical concepts to physiology and pathophysiology, using hypothetical patient vignettes to illustrate core concepts. Completely updated to include full-color art, expanded clinical notes, and bulleted end-of-chapter summaries, the revised Third Edition helps medical students understand the importance of the patient and bridges the gap between biochemistry, physiology, and clinical care.

A new companion Website will offer the fully searchable online text, an interactive question bank with 250 multiple-choice questions, animations depicting key biochemical processes, self-contained summaries of patients described in the book, and a comprehensive list of disorders discussed in the text, with relevant Website links. An image bank, containing all the images in the text, will be available to faculty.

Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry: A Clinical Approach Review

Biochem is not the easiest subject in the world but it can be more understandable if you have a good book that can simplify complex principles and this book does that. Teaching biochemistry using the clinical approach I believe allows you to apply the principles to everyday life. The book provides vignettes at the beginning of each chapter with colorful patient in the "Waiting Room" with names like "Otto Shape" and "Ann O 'Rexia" with symptoms that will correspond with the teachings of that chapter. They have color coded icons to indicate female, male and infant/young child patients. The icons appear in the margin, identifying information related to the materials in the chapter. They have clinical notes that are typically related to the patients that explain signs or symptoms. There are also method notes that elaborate on how biochemistry is performed and interpreted in lab tests. All of these little side notes allow for a greater understanding of the materials as well as enhances your critical thinking skills. This books will definitely help you get through biochemistry.

Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution

by Michael J. Behe

Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution

Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution Overview

Michael J. Behe, a biochemist at Lehigh University, presents here a scientific argument for the existence of God. Examining the evolutionary theory of the origins of life, he can go part of the way with Darwin--he accepts the idea that species have been differentiated by the mechanism of natural selection from a common ancestor. But he thinks that the essential randomness of this process can explain evolutionary development only at the macro level, not at the micro level of his expertise. Within the biochemistry of living cells, he argues, life is "irreducibly complex." This is the last black box to be opened, the end of the road for science. Faced with complexity at this level, Behe suggests that it can only be the product of "intelligent design."

Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution Review

Interesting how polarizing this book is.

The book itself is interesting enough. It does a good job of explaining the massively complicated world of molecular biochemistry to people like me who are not biologists, chemists, or biochemists. And even though it relies heavily on analogy to get its point across, it does indeed make its point effectively. More effective still is the realization that, for every process explained, there are thousands of others not explained, and there is no reason to believe that any of them are any simpler or more straightforward.

From a philosophical pragmatist perspective, ideas that are true lead to all sorts of different discoveries, and to reliable predictions of the future. Ideas that are false lead to dead ends all around. Darwinian evolution seems to occupy an odd middle ground; it certainly has led to all kinds of discoveries, but resists being modeled mathematically, and I am not aware of any predictions for the future made on the basis of it that have come true.

What about the intelligent design proposal? What will it lead to? What will it explain? Can it be successfully modeled mathematically?

I think the funniest thing about this book (or rather its reception) is the apparent belief on the part of some people (both fans and opponents) that, if they accept Behe's argument, they automatically have to start obeying the Pope, or join the Westboro Baptist Church or something. Behe proposes no such thing.

Rapid Review Biochemistry with Student Consult Online Access Review

One thing I have always loved about Goljan's review books is that they are easy to read and stress a good conceptual framework. He uses an outline format but they are mostly complete sentences.

My only criticism is that Rapid Review Biochemistry feels a little rushed and like it doesn't have 100% attention to detail, especially in the tables. To compare, Rapid Review Pathology is a little more of a polished book. For instance, under cobalamin deficiency (Table 4-1), achlorhydria is listed as a sign/symptom. Okay, if you have cobalamin deficiency secondary to pernicious anemia that's definitely true, but it's not quite true as written. Small things like this add up. Still one of the better biochem review books in my opinion.

Langman's Medical Embryology

Langman's Medical Embryology Overview

Widely acclaimed for its clinical relevance and clear writing style, Langman's Medical Embryology provides a user-friendly and innovative approach to learning embryology. The revised eleventh edition presents medical and health professions students with a concise yet thorough description of embryology and its clinical significance, an awareness of which is essential in the diagnosis, and prevention of birth defects. It features outstanding full-color clinical images and photographs, end-of-chapter Summaries, Problems to Solve, and Clinical Correlates boxes.

A companion Website includes fully searchable text, interactive review questions and problems, updated Simbryo animations of embryologic system development, and PowerPoint slides for instructors.

Langman's Medical Embryology Review

This is simply one of the better textbooks I've used in med school. For the most part, I know people don't really use textbooks anymore. Personally, I don't use very many textbooks, but Langman's is something I definitely always use and find handy. Embryology can be a tricky subject, but Langman's makes everything clear and concise. It has great diagrams and pictures to help you visualize what is going on exactly, and the text portions of the book are to the point and don't contain all the "extra" stuff that isn't really necessary (and only confuses people). If you need to learn embryology, use Langman's.

The Mind and the Brain: Neuroplasticity and the Power of Mental Force

by Jeffrey M. Schwartz, Sharon Begley

The Mind and the Brain: Neuroplasticity and the Power of Mental Force

The Mind and the Brain: Neuroplasticity and the Power of Mental Force Overview

Schwartz's undergraduate major was philosophy, and that interest as well as Buddhism has broadened his outlook and makes this book potentially attractive to more readers than those habitually interested in "brain science." Psychiatrist Schwartz pioneered the use of positron-emission tomography in studying obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The behaviorists' therapeutic use of the often-harsh exposure and prevention method with OCD struck Schwartz as brutal and unproductive. Searching for a new approach, he gradually developed the four-step method that he and science writer Begley thoroughly describe here. Employing the Buddhist idea of willful mindfulness, Schwartz and his colleagues enjoyed considerable research and clinical success. A long, informal collaboration with physicist Henry Stapp enabled Schwartz to overcome the problem of free will and moral action, and one of his major achievements was proving the neuroplasticity of the adult brain, thanks to which the formation of new transmission routes coincides with that of new neurons. Schwartz and Begley bring to life the thinking and work of many original investigators in a book that thoughtful readers will enjoy. William Beatty

The Mind and the Brain: Neuroplasticity and the Power of Mental Force Review

Definitely one of the best reads for anyone interested in the question of the juncture of mind and brain. Jeff Schwartz builds a powerful case for the agency of free will in humans. Very readable, full of information. He provides a more humane therapy for OCD than exposure therapy. Being a biology major before I turned to psychotherapy, I was fascinated by his explanation of how quantum physics, of all places, could provide the answer of how the human soul can "animate" or cause action in the body, the mind-body connection. One of my favorite books.

Your Inner Fish (A Journey into the 3.5 Billion Year History of the Human Body)

by Neil Shubin

Your Inner Fish (A Journey into the 3.5 Billion Year History of the Human Body)

Your Inner Fish (A Journey into the 3.5 Billion Year History of the Human Body) Overview

Fish paleontologist Shubin illuminates the subject of evolution with humor and clarity in this compelling look at how the human body evolved into its present state. Parsing the millennia-old genetic history of the human form is a natural project for Shubin, who chairs the department of organismal biology and anatomy at the University of Chicago and was co-discoverer of Tiktaalik, a 375-million-year-old fossil fish whose flat skull and limbs, and finger, toe, ankle and wrist bones, provide a link between fish and the earliest land-dwelling creatures. Shubin moves smoothly through the anatomical spectrum, finding ancient precursors to human teeth in a 200-million-year-old fossil of the mouse-size part animal, part reptile tritheledont; he also notes cellular similarities between humans and sponges. Other fossils reveal the origins of our senses, from the eye to that wonderful Rube Goldberg contraption the ear. Shubin excels at explaining the science, making each discovery an adventure, whether it's a Pennsylvania roadcut or a stony outcrop beset by polar bears and howling Arctic winds. I can imagine few things more beautiful or intellectually profound than finding the basis for our humanity... nestled inside some of the most humble creatures that ever lived, he writes, and curious readers are likely to agree. Your Inner Fish (A Journey into the 3.5 Billion Year History of the Human Body) Review

This was an interesting read; the author writes very clearly and informally, but in the earlier chapters it does read like he is giving a lecture to new (and American) students, as he uses little mannerisms taught as basic presentation skills. The editor should have caught those in the first draft. The author takes us through his early forays into the field in search of fossils, through to his co-discovery of an important fossil fish. We then work through the development of `genetic' palaeontology, as embryology and later DNA science slowly unravelled our genetic history, leading us back to our `inner fish'. Although the author manages to clearly describe the discovery of our genetic heritage (through some unpleasant genetic experiments - though not carried out by him) and show the development of current creatures from their early ancestors, he doesn't describe HOW we evolved - the process of natural selection and reproduction with variation (or words to that effect - see professor Dawkins for the latest details). Darwin is mentioned only three times in the index. There might have been space constraints on the author, but although he gave an excellent picture of the stages of our evolution, unless you are familiar with Darwin's `dangerous' theory, you might not even notice the gap in the book.
